OCTOBER GARDENING

          COUNTRYWIDE:

a)  Feed roses regularly and remove faded blooms

b) Start mowing the lawn regularly, feed once a month and water during dry weather.

c) Continue making softwood cutting.

d) Water all shrubs and tree once a week during dry weather.

e) Thin out peaches, apricots and plums before the pips get hard.

f) As the fruit starts to swell, give trees their second application of fertilizer.

g) Watch out for insects all over the garden and spray where necessary.

          WINTER-RAINFALL REGIONS:

a)  Sow all summer-flowering annuals.

b) Thin out bunches in the grapevine where necessary.

c) Sow vegetables like  beetroot, cabbage, carrots, celery, cucumbers, dwarf beans, brinjals, leeks, lettuces, melons, onions, parsley, parsnips, peppers, pumpkins, radishes, runner beans, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes (tubers or cuttings) , tomatoes, turnips and vegetable marrows.

         DRY CONTINENTAL AND HIGHVELD SUMMER-RAINFALL REGIONS:

a)  Sow summer-flowering annuals.

b)  Spray apples, pears and quinces against codling moth and peaches against fruit fly.

c) Sow vegetables like asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, cucumbers, dwarf beans, dwarf spinach, brinjals, globe and jerusalem artichokes, lettuces, melons, parsley, parsnips, peppers, pumpkins, radishes, runner beans, sweet potatoes (tubers or cuttings), swiss chard, tomatoes and vegetable marrows.

       SUBTROPICAL REGIONS:

a) Sow quick-maturing summer annuals, like amaranthus, celosia, marigolds, portulacas and zinnias

b) Carry on feeding the garden with 3:1:5 or 5:1:5 once a month.

c) Fertilize and mulch heliconias and calatheas which are starting to grow during this month.

d) Fertilize guavas, litchis and mangoes.

e) Sow vegetables like radishes and sweet potato ( tubers or cuttings).

        TEMPERATE SUMMER-RAINFALL REGIONS:

a) Sow quick-maturing summer annuals.

b) Control weeds by applying a thick mulch in garden beds.

c) Sow vegetables like asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, cucumbers, dwarf beans, dwarf spinach, brinjals, globe and jerusalem artichokes, leeks, lettuces, melons, parsley, parsnips, peppers, pumpkins, radishes, runner beans, sweet potatoes (tubers or cuttings), swiss chard, tomatoes and vegetable marrows.
