NOVEMBER GARDENING:
COUNTRYWIDE:
a) Sow seed of winter-flowering annuals, including anemones, English daisies, fairy primroses and ranunculus.
b) Sow seed of the following perennials; Alpine asters, baby's breath, bergenias, blue daisies, carnations, catmint, columbines, coral bells, cup flowers, dianthus, Dusty Miller, foxgloves, gazanias, heliotropes, hollyhocks, lupins, meadows rue, michaelmas daisies, oriental poppies, penstemons, polka dot plants, primroses, scabious, sea lavender, shasta daisies, snow-in-summer, statice, sun rose,sweet violets and yarrow.
c) Plant quick-maturing summer annuals like alyssums, balsams, candytufts, impatiens, marigolds, portulacas and salvias.
d) Lift and divide irises after they have finished flowering .
e) After the foliage of spring bulbs has died down, lift them and dust them with sulphur before storing them.
f) Feed and mulch cannas and dahlias; water agapanthus well.
g) Continue feeding, mowing and watering the lawn.
h) Water hydrangeas well and feed regularly with an appropriate fertilizer; give them a thick mulch.
i) Spray roses and fruit trees regularly.
WINTER-RAINFALL REGIONS:
a) Dead-head roses regularly and water two or three times weekly.
b) Keep all perennials well watered and fertilized.
c) Feed flowering shrubs with 3:1:5 (26) SR once a month
d) Feed Hydrangeas.
e) Keep an eye out for red spider mite as they love hot, dry conditions.
f) Sow vegetables like beetroot, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, dwarf beans, lettuces, melons, parsley, pumpkins, radishes, runner beans, sweet potatoes (tubers or cuttings), swiss chard, turnips and vegetable marrows.
DRY CONTINENTAL AND HIGHVELD SUMMER-RAINFALL REGIONS:
a) Lift daffodil bulbs as soon as the foliage has died down completely.
b) Rambling roses can be pruned now.
c) Dead-head roses regularly.
d) Sow lawn seed.
e) Sow vegetables like beetroot, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, dwarf beans, lettuces, parsley, pumpkins, radishes, runner beans, sweet potatoes (tubers or cuttings), swiss chard, turnips and vegetable marrows.
SUBTROPICAL REGIONS:
a) Feed bananas and mulch if necessary.
b) Feed foliage plants with a nitrogen fertilizer.
c) Plant sweet potato ( tubers or cuttings).
TEMPERATE SUMMER-RAINFALL REGIONS:
a) Stake perennials where necessary.
b) Prune rambling roses such as banksia during this month after they have flowered.
c) Feed summer-flowering shrubs.
d) Sow vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, dwarf beans, dwarf spinach, globe and jerusalem artichokes, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuces, melons, pumpkins, radishes, runner beans, sweet potatoes (tubers or cuttings), swiss chard, tomatoes and vegetable marrows.
